We are opened minds, being filled for the future. – a Solon student
Solon Junior Academy Charter School in Chandler serves students in grades
Kindergarten through Fourth Grade. Solon provides a quality solution for
families who seek smaller class sizes, a student centered environment, and a
well-defined curriculum. We utilize the Direct Instruction* methodology, which
is a highly structured program providing constant interaction between students
and the teacher. This method groups children according to ability ensuring all
children learn the basics and allows them to move forward at their own pace.
Solon Junior Academy offers a full
day Kindergarten program. SJA believes that by providing a solid foundation in
reading, writing and mathematics even to our littlest learners, we are preparing
them for success. For the 2005-2006 school year Solon will also offer
Pre-Kindergarten classes. Solon Kindergarteners scored at the 85th percentile in
reading and the 86th percentile in math on the National Stanford 9 Achievement
Test scores.
As further illustration of the success of our academic
programs, those students who began Kindergarten with us in our first year of
operation have continued to surpass grade level expectations in all areas. In
2002, second graders scored at the 100th percentile in reading
and the 81st percentile in math.
The third graders met or exceeded the AIMS standards in 2004
scoring these percentages: math 54%, reading 74%, and writing 94% met or
exceeded the state standards. No students at Solon Fell Below the Standard.
All staff are currently working towards a current Arizona
Certification or have the status of a "Highly Qualified Teacher." They
must obtain full state certification or hold a bachelor’s degree and also
demonstrate, by passing a rigorous state test, subject knowledge of the basic
elementary curriculum. All of the instructional paraprofessionals
have completed and passed the state Para Pro assessment or have appropriate
state credentials towards the status of "Highly Qualified
Paraprofessional." All employees must meet the state requirements or
demonstrate competence in the areas that are established by the NCLB and the
State Department of Education by 2006.
The Junior Academy is accredited by the North Central Association Commission on
Accreditation and School Improvement. NCA CASI accreditation assures the public
that the school is meeting high quality standards and implementing a school
improvement plan focused on increasing student performance.
